Suitcase exactly 160cm? It still fits the Shinkansen overhead rack
Bags up to 160cm total (L+W+H) need no oversize-seat booking on the Tokaido Shinkansen. One traveller with a bag right at 160cm put it in the overhead rack on both Tokyo–Osaka legs without issues.
Check first: Both trips were in the Green Car; ordinary-car racks can be busier. Bags over 160cm need a reserved oversized-baggage seat. Another family of four with full-size cases confirms rack space but says lifting them overhead is hard. Oversized-baggage seats exist only on Tokaido/Sanyo/Kyushu lines, not JR East.
