In Kyoto, a short taxi can save an hour of buses
Kyoto's sights are spread out and buses are slow and packed. One traveller's shrine was 1h15 by transit but 20 minutes by taxi; others took taxis from Kyoto Station to Kiyomizu-dera and called it the best call of the trip.
Check first: Costs more than the bus; share with 3–4 people to make it close to transit prices.
